About Youth in Community Development

As society becomes driven by fast-paced technology and quick gratification, convincing today’s youth to participate in long-term projects such as community development becomes more challenging than ever. What does it take to keep young people invested in their communities, and what can adults do to assist them in continuing the legacy that has transformed communities nationwide?

Throughout the nation, many community development organizations and initiatives are reaping the benefits of youth involvement in their work: deeper engagement with the communities they serve, reenergized staff and volunteers, and unique insights that give their work greater impact.

Symposium on Youth and Community Development

NeighborWorks® America explored this dynamic topic in its symposium, “Youth Matters — New Voices Energizing Community Development,” February 22, 2006, in Atlanta. During this exciting symposium, participants experienced the energy and vitality between adults and youth as they work together to solve community development concerns. Adults learned how to leverage the skills, insights and energy of young people in order to make their organizations more effective — and youth learned how they can create and take advantage of opportunities to make a real impact on the communities in which they live.

Community Development Youth Awards

NeighborWorks America announced the first Innovations in Community Development Youth Awards, honoring four young citizens from across the nation who have dedicated their time, energy, and unique talents to improving their communities. The awards were presented Wednesday, February 22 at the NeighborWorks symposium, “Youth Matters: New Voices Energizing Community Development,” in Atlanta, Georgia. Visit the Awards page for more information.
