Green Living Campaign
Northeast South Dakota
Community Action Program, Sisseton, SD

Northeast South Dakota Community Action Program's Green Living Campaign recently got a visit from the local power company's mascot, Ollie the Otter

Northeast South Dakota Community Action Program (NESDCAP), a NeighborWorks Organization based in Sisseton, South Dakota, is using its NESDCAP Green Living Campaign to inform its community about the benefits of going green and about the incentives available to help finance green efforts. As a primary component of the campaign, NESDCAP distributes conservation kits to clients who seek emergency utility assistance and to residents who attend regional home shows. The kits contain educational materials and items such as compact fluorescent light bulbs and low-flow shower heads that reduce resource consumption in the home. The local power company's mascot, Ollie the Otter, attended a recent campaign event. Read more [PDF]. »

Montgomery Housing Partners' GRIT team cleans up the neighborhood

(MHP) and its Glenville Road Interdepartmental Team (GRIT) have embarked on a public education campaign to remediate ongoing problems associated with improper trash disposal. To unite the community in a cleanup effort, the Silver Spring, Maryland-based organization has hosted festivals focused on appropriate trash and recycling procedures. Afterward, the volunteers enjoyed a resident-prepared lunch and presentations from the local police department and the local farmer’s market. Read more about this community effort [PDF].»

Fairmount Fellows Program,
Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation, Dorchester, MA

fairmont fellows

In a neighborhood with a high concentration of respiratory health problems, Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation (CSNDC) is using its Fairmount Fellows Program to engage Boston-area residents in environmental justice issues.

After surveying more than 200 households this summer, the fellows have discovered that 94 percent of those surveyed think air pollution is a significant issue in the community.  The fellows, who all live in the target area, also found that more than half their neighbors regularly drive cars because the area is underserved by the city’s transit system. Union Crossing Planning Committee

Lawrence CommunityWorks (LCW), located in Lawrence, Massachusetts, is not leaving the design of its $75 million Union Crossing redevelopment project entirely to the professionals. Although the group is partnering with award-winning green architects to convert two 19th-century textile mills into a modern housing development, it is also getting design input from its Union Crossing Planning Committee, a group of community residents who volunteered to be on the project. Before LCW and its partners make decisions on the project’s numerous details, they consult the committee for advice on how to make the development a functional, sustainable community. DCLT and partner organization Clean Energy Durham collaborated to train 10 West End residents about how energy is consumed in the home and consequent ways to conserve resources.  This summer, those 10 volunteers are going door to door to demonstrate to their neighbors how energy efficiency impacts their lives.
