Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast with devastating results three years ago on August 29, 2005. Hurricane Rita came to the same region four weeks later. In the end nearly 300,000 families lost their homes.
NeighborWorks America made a commitment to support the region’s immediate recovery and long-term rebuilding. We opened offices in Mississippi and Louisiana and have provided $10 million in grant funds to the region. We have trained, provided technical assistance, and supported counseling efforts of hundreds of staff in dozens of organizations. NHSA-CDFI has made over $4 million in loans.
Please take a few minutes to view the video that was produced to capture the enormity of the hurricanes and our response to date. The story is clear: we have made progress, but we have lots more to do. So many NeighborWorks staff have contributed to our response. Thanks to your hard work and commitment, we are making a difference in the region and helping families rebuild their lives and their communities.
