Nearly 1,100 families registered to meet with 17 mortgage servicers or nonprofit housing counselors at the Hartford Convention Center on Saturday, February 14, 2009.  For some families, their experience was heartbreaking – their servicers could not modify their loans.  For others, they were able to get workouts and modifications that enabled them to save their homes and make affordable mortgage payments.

For the nearly 200 families who came to meet with their servicers who were not present, they were able to meet with one of nine housing counseling agencies from both Massachusetts and Connecticut in both individual sessions and group sessions.

Senator Lieberman (I-CT) and Rep. Jim Himes (D-4-CT) sent legislative staff to the event to meet with families, counselors and servicers. Rep. Joseph Courtney (D-2-CT) attended the event and spoke to the Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren; Hope NOW Alliance Executive Director Faith Schwartz; and Chris Harper-Fahey with NeighborWorks America about the needs he sees in his district and neighboring towns, including New London, Connecticut.  Rep. Courtney asked if any nonprofits currently working in New London would be interested in working with him on convening a foreclosure workshop.  Harper-Fahey introduced the Congressman’s housing staff to Mary Jane Konanchak from CHFA to begin the discussion for the workshop.  The Congressman suggested event dates in late March or early April.  Also mentioned was NeighborWorks New Horizons, which has opened an office in new London, as part of its expansion plan.

Special thanks goes out to NHS Springfield, MA; NHS New Haven and NHS New Britain, CT for participating in this important foreclosure workshop.
