NeighborWorks Community Building and Organizing Programs

Community building and organizing activities are central to effective community development and foundational to the NeighborWorks network. Community Building & Organizing (CB&O) Programs support NeighborWorks organizations and other community-based development organizations to build healthy communities by developing resident leadership, strengthening resident-led associations, and sponsoring community building activities that enhance relationships among neighbors and spur organizing efforts leading to positive community change.
At NeighborWorks, we define Community Building and Organizing as continuous, self-renewing efforts; led by community residents; engaged in collective action; aimed at relationship building, problem solving, and building a stronger community.
Principles of Community Building and Organizing in the NeighborWorks Network
- We believe that people have the ability to name their problems and identify resources needed to solve them.
- We bring out the gifts of people in a community to increase their collective power and transform themselves and their community.
Results of Community Building and Organizing
- Improved lives
- Greater equity
- New or strengthened institutions, organizations, and relationships
- New standards and expectations for life in community
At NeighborWorks America we primarily support the community building and organizing work done in the field through our CB&O Membership Program. Only chartered NeighborWorks organizations are eligible for membership. Please refer to our Frequently Asked Questions for more information.
