NeighborWorks of Pueblo recognizes that developing resident leaders is paramount to the success of its communities. One such resident leader, David Balsick, has served as president of the Bessemer Association for Neighborhood Development for the past 10 years. He also serves as a board member with NeighborWorks of Pueblo. Balsick not only inspires his neighbors, but he motivates them to action. Balsick developed “Solutions Teams” to tackle the challenges faced by the Bessemer community. Through these “Solutions Teams,” residents own accountability for solutions by monitoring their progress towards success. As a result of Balsick’s leadership, he and his team of volunteers acquired more than $3.8 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. These funds were used to implement community improvements that included new sidewalks, playground equipment, ADA access ramps, lighting and streetscape design.
