Community HousingWorks: a Bright Spot in San Diego’s Runaway Housing Market
Articles excerpted from the Fall 2003 issue of NeighborWorks® bright ideas
Stories by Janis K. Oppelt

December 3, 2003 -- With it’s near ideal climate, San Diego – despite the recent tragic wildfires – remains one of the most appealing and least affordable housing markets.

The good news is that there are many affordable housing success stories throughout San Diego County. One NeighborWorks network organization – Community HousingWorks – is responsible for many of them. Formerly two separate organizations, San Diego Neighborhood Housing Services and Community Housing of North County, Community HousingWorks (CHW) provides a continuum of services to residents in the small cities of North County and in San Diego’s most ethnically diverse community of City Heights.

In addition to single-family homes, CHW also offers hundreds of apartments in new and rehabbed rental complexes, childcare centers, and transitional housing for homeless families.
