May 16, 2007 – NeighborWorks organizations staff are always doing great things and sometimes getting recognized for them. Such is the case of Noemi Vega, who works with Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) of New York City. Vega, who has worked as a housing counselor at NHS since 2001, was recently distinguished as an "Outstanding Woman of 2006" by a major New York City Hispanic newspaper, El Diario.

Vega, born in the South Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, is a grandmother of two. She has worked on community housing issues for over 25 years. Her work with NHS focuses on helping members from two large unions (District Council 37 and Local 1199) to find and keep affordable housing.

El Diario is the number one Spanish-language newspaper in New York, with a daily readership of 243,000. Since 1995 it has been hosting annual recognition ceremonies for outstanding female Hispanic community leaders in New York City. Recipients come from the areas of government service, community organizations, education and communications.

Naomi Vega was recognized on April 29 at the Mandarin Oriental hotel as an "Outstanding Woman of 2006," along with other Latina community leaders. To read more about Vega's story, please click here.
